According to NFL sources, the New York Jets have given the Buffalo Bills permission to talk to offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer in regards to their head coaching position.

However, Schottenheimer has apparently has declined the chance to interview for the Buffalo head coaching job this week or after the season.

Throughout the season, Schottenheimer has remarked repeatedly how much he enjoys working with Jets head coach Rex Ryan and rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez. He has also said on multiple occasions how happy he is in his current position as the offensive coordinator of the league's top-ranked running attack.

After Saturday's 24-14 playoff win over the Cincinnati Bengals, Ryan conceded that he would almost
certainly lose Schottenheimer after this season.

"I realize we're probably only going to have him for as long as we're in this tournament," Ryan said, "but we're enjoying it right now."

On Sunday, Schottenheimer said he's fascinated by the Jets future with rookies such as Sanchez and Shonn Greene and young Pro Bowl linemen Nick Mangold and D'Brickashaw Ferguson.

"I'd love to be a head coach, that's my dream," said Schottenheimer. "But I want to be a head coach when the time is right, when the situation is right. I don't want to just take a job to take a job. For the first time in three years, I'm really, really happy. I'm happy working for Rex. I love the area. I love the Jets fans. I love what we've done. I love the guys on our roster."

That's good news for Jets fans.
