According to reports, Romeo Crennel has spoken to the New York Giants by telephone about their vacant defensive coordinator's job, however former Cleveland Browns coach is apparently, giving the Kansas City Chiefs the first shot at hiring him.
Crennel's agent, Joe Linta, told The Associated Press that Crennel is focused on becoming the Chiefs' defensive coordinator. Sources close to the situation are saying that the two sides could get a deal done in the next couple of days if there is isn't a major breakdown.
If he is hired by Kansas City, Crennel would reunite with general manager Scott Pioli and offensive coordinator Charlie Weis. They were all in New England together during its Super Bowl run. Weis was hired by Kansas City last week.
The problem with this entire situation is that Kansas City has not yet fired defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast.
Pendergast officially became the defensive coordinator for the Chiefs on March 13, 2009, when he reunited with head coach Todd Haley. The two were coordinators for the Arizona Cardinals under Ken Whisenhunt.
Linta told the AP on Tuesday that Crennel talked to the Giants on Monday.
The Giants also interviewed Bills interim head coach Perry Fewell for defensive coordinator, which opened when rookie coordinator Bill Sheridan was fired the day after the regular season ended.
New York gave up 427 points, ranking it third from the bottom in the NFL. Only the Detroit Lions and St. Louis Rams gave up more points.
