In the wake of USC head coach Pete Carroll's sudden departure from the Trojans, Jacksonville Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio has reportedly been made an offer to be the next head man at Southern California.
According to a report in the Los Angeles Daily News, the newspaper said the University of Southern California presented a formal offer to the 46-year-old Del Rio on Monday.
Del Rio is a former USC player. He played linebacker for the Trojans, however he has never coached at the college level.
On Tuesday morning, Del Rio was scheduled to meet with Jaguars owner Wayne Weaver to discuss the future of the franchise and denies the report that he is leaving.
"All of those things are manufactured," Del Rio said. "The only thing I can tell you is I've been busy working on the Jaguars for 2010. We're busy at work, trying to build this thing strong. Those other things are a figment of other people's imaginations."
Del Rio has three years and $15 million remaining on his contract with the Jaguars.
Weaver did not want to speculate on Del Rio's future.
"Look, you know I'm not going to get into those things," he said. "Jack Del Rio is our coach right now."
Jacksonville last made the playoffs in 2007. They Jags, at 7-9, finished the season on a four-game losing streak and faded out of playoff contention with those losses.
The fans in Jacksonville seemed to be fed-up with the losses. The Jaguars were unable to sell out almost all of their games in 2009. Nine out of ten home games were blacked-out of the Jacksonville viewing area.
