Seattle Seahawks coach Jim Mora has been fired, the first coach in team history to be let go after one season.
According to NFL sources, Mora attended a meeting Friday morning with management, at which time he was told Seattle did not win enough games to save his job.
Seattle lost their final four games to finish 2009 at 5-11.
"We've made a tough decision today," Seahawks CEO Tod Leiweke said in a statement. "It became apparent after conducting an extensive internal audit that a new direction was needed to provide an opportunity for the organization to be successful. Today's decision, while difficult, is part of the process in building a franchise with a new vision in 2010."
ESPN is reporting that the Seahawks are targeting USC Trojans head coach Pete Carrol to be Mora's replacement. It has been know for a while that Carroll is interested in a return to the NFL, if the right situation fell into place.
All the pieces could be falling into place with the Seahawks. Carroll met with Seahawks CEO Tod Leiweke and other members of the organization earlier this week.
According to reports, the two sides are close to a five-year contract worth about $7 million a year. The deal would make Carroll the teams head coach and president.
Although Leiweke still wants to be involved with the decisions, Carroll would would have final authority on personnel and will be heavily involved in the hiring of the new GM.
