New Cleveland Browns team president Mike Holmgren has made his decision about his head coaching situation. Eric Mangini will return for a second season as coach of the Browns.
Mangini's job security was in jeopardy after the Browns started 1-11, however he has appeared to coach his way back into the job.
There is no doubt that the team's four-game winning streak to close out the 2009 season helped Holmgren with his choice. It was the Browns' longest since 1994.
Holmgren and Mangini spent the last two days in meetings to discus the future of the organization.
"I'm happy to announce that Eric Mangini will return as head coach of the Cleveland Browns in 2010," Holmgren said in a statement. "Over the past few weeks Eric and I have had a chance to talk on a number of occasions including our meetings over the last two days. I was able to gain some tremendous insight into his thought process and philosophies, and came away from our meetings very impressed."
After an up and down season, the Browns new new boss then evidently liked what he heard during his face-to-face meetings with Mangini.
"In my opinion, Eric has gained the respect and admiration of players, coaches and others in the organization," said Holmgren. "With him continuing to lead the team I feel that we are headed in the right direction."
Even though Holmgren and Mangini have different offensive and defensive philosophies, he apparently found enough common ground to want to work with Mangini.
Mangini was granted a second season one day shy of his first anniversary with the Browns. He was hired on January 8th of last year.
