Friday afternoon in the Gator Bowl, legendary Florida State Seminoles head coach Bobby Bowden gets set to patrol the FSU sideline for one last game against the West Virginia Mountaineers.
Not many coaches in any sport have ever been able to achieved iconic status. Bowden certainly has done just that in his years at Florida State, today against his former team he gets one last chance to add to his legacy.
NCAA odds makers are calling the Mountaineers a slight favorite in this one. The spread in Vegas is sitting at less than a field goal. The line is at, West Virginia -2 with the total in the game set at 59.5.
Although it was a difficult season, the Seminoles are in postseason play for the 28th straight year. The Noles are 6-6, however they did play well down the stretch. The Noles won four of their last six regular season games to become bowl eligible.
The two losses during that stretch were to a very tough Clemson team and the then-ranked No. 1 Florida Gators in Gainesville.
"Nothing lasts forever, does it?" Bowden said. "But I've had some wonderful years here at Florida State, you know it. Hadn't done as good lately as I wish I could have, but I've had wonderful years, no regrets."
Seminoles are 4-0 under him in the Gator Bowl, including double-digit wins over West Virginia in 1982 and 2005. The Mountaineers have won four consecutive bowls since that last loss to Florida State.
The Mountaineers are 9-3 and have much more talent on the field, however the Noles are expected to play above themselves in Bowden's last game.
It may go against conventional betting wisdom, but I am taking the Seminoles in this one. The safer bet though is the over. These two teams are going to put up some serious points in this one.
Take the over 59.5 points.
