Utah Utes Odds The Utah Utes and the California Golden Bears both entered this season with their sights set on reaching a BCS bowl or possibly playing for a national championship. However, inconsistent play dashed those hopes and the Poinsettia Bowl it is!
The No. 23 Utes try to extend the nation's longest postseason winning streak to nine when they face the Golden Bears in Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego on Wednesday.
NCAA odds makers see this one as being a pretty close match-up. The spread in Vegas is sitting at about a field goal. The line is at, California -3.5 with the total in the game set at 51.5.
Utah burst onto the national scene last season after going 13-0 and beating then-No. 4 Alabama 31-17 in the Sugar Bowl to finish second in the rankings. The Utes opened 2009 with consecutive wins and ran the nation's longest active winning streak to 16, before
California won their first three games to move to No. 6 in the poll before a loss of their own to the Ducks, 42-3 on September 26th. They lost again to USC the following week, but the Golden Bears won five of six, including victories over ranked Pac-10 opponents Arizona and Stanford.
Bears quarterback Kevin Riley had a big season. The junior signal caller threw for over 2,600 yards and 17 touchdowns. Riley may have a tough time with the Utes defense, which led the Mountain West with 15 interceptions while holding opponents to an average of 172.8 passing yards.
The Utes are expected to have freshman Jordan Wynn under center as he gets a fifth consecutive start after winning the job from junior Terrance Cain. Wynn went 3-2 as the starter and has played well.
Expect more of the same. I like the Utes in this one.
Take Utah getting the 3.5 points.
