Sunday afternoon in Arlington, the 8-4 Cowboys hope to quiet the critics' talk that Dallas can't win a big game in December when they face-off against a San Diego Chargers team that has proven over and over that they can.
A season ago, the Cowboys went 1 and 3 in the month of December, including a 44-6 season-ending loss to the Philadelphia Eagles that kept them out of the playoffs. The Chargers on the other hand, are riding the longest December winning streak in NFL history.
Even without history on their side, NFL odds makers are calling the Cowboys a home favorite in this one. The Chargers may be one of the league's hottest teams, but the Vegas line is sitting at, Dallas -3.5 with the total listed at 48.5.
In last week's 31-24 loss to the New York Giants, quarterback Tony Romo fell to 5-9 in December despite throwing for a career-high 392 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions and the Cowboys are sick of hearing about it.
"We have to get back to it and forget all this December stuff," said tight end Jason Witten. "I'm not trying to avoid it or say it's not true. We've got to put it away. You let another one slip and you're really in trouble."
The 9-3 Chargers seem to find it a whole lot easier to find December wins.
San Diego has won a league-record 15 in a row in the month. The Chargers have not been on the losing end of a December game since 2005.
"We seem to finish strong," said running back LaDainian Tomlinson. "We've talked about it and really made it one of our mottos. I think that has a lot to do with our mindsets in December. We want to play our best football in December going into January."
So much of the game of football has to do with attitude. I think this week against San Diego is the worst possible scenario for the Cowboys to break out of this rut. While the Chargers know they can win, the Cowboys may be doubting themselves.
Until they prove they can play well, I'm not sold on the Cowboys.
Take the Chargers getting the points on the road.
