Friday night in Provo, the 20th ranked BYU Cougars will host the Utah State Aggies at LaVell Edwards Stadium. BYU had early season BCS busting aspirations, but after losing to FSU at home their dreams of a nation championship run are over.
The Cougars look to continue to rebound from that disheartening defeat by maintaining their recent dominance of Utah State on Friday night. BYU has won nine straight in the series since 1994 by an average of 18.8 points.
NCAA odds makers have the Cougars as heavy favorites at home. The Vegas line is sitting at BYU -24 with the total in the game set at 64.
BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall admits it was tough to deal with all the attention surrounding the team's season-opening win over then-No. 3 Oklahoma and the chance the Cougars were en route to a BCS bowl bid. However, when their 18-game home winning streak was snapped by Florida State, the Cougars came back down to earth.
BYU got back on track with a 42-23 win over Colorado State in its Mountain West Conference opener last Saturday. The Cougars survived 10 penalties for 117 yards and some sloppy moments on defense to hand the Rams their first loss.
The Aggies got their first win of the season last Saturday in a 53-34 rout of Southern Utah. Their 604 yard of total offense as the ninth-highest total in team history.
The Aggies will likely need another huge offensive performance to keep up with the Cougars Friday night.
This is definitely a game that BYU should and almost certainly will win, however 24 points is a lot to give to an offense that is capable of putting up the kind of numbers Utah State did last week.
