Sunday afternoon in the Meadowlands, two of this season's biggest surprises square off when the 2-0 New York Jets host the 0-2 Tennessee Titans.
Win-less for the Titans, might be a little deceptive as they have lost their first two by a total of six points. Tennessee opened with an overtime loss at the Pittsburgh Steelers before blowing a 14-point lead last week and falling 34-31 to Houston on a late field goal.
Vegas prognosticators have this one very close. NFL odds makers list the line at New York -1.5 with 36.5.
The unbeaten Jets look for another dominating performance from the NFL's top-rated defense. New York has allowed just 482 yards and have not given up a touchdown from scrimmage in back-to-back games for the first time since doing it in three straight in 1993. The only touchdown New York has given up came on a fumble return in their season-opener in Houston.
The most promising footnotes for the Jets is the fact that the New York defense defense is performing without perhaps its best pass rusher in Calvin Pace. The seven-year veteran has been suspended the first four games for violating the league's performance-enhancing substance abuse policy.
A season ago, the New York "D" ranked 28th against the pass and gave up an average of 329.4 total yards per game to rank 16th overall.
"This is a new beginning," said linebacker Bart Scott. "I don't pay attention to the past. The past is the past. It's a new day. It's a new team. It's not the same old Jets people are used to."
The Titans have too much talent and they will be a good team this season, but this is not the week they turn it around.
Take the Jets at home and give the 1.5 points.
