According to San Diego Police, Chargers star linebacker, Shawne Merriman, was arrested after a woman described as his girlfriend accused him of choking and restraining her.
Tila Nguyen, a singer and TV personality under the name Tila Tequila, called police early on Sunday and signed a citizen's arrest warrant charging Merriman with battery and false imprisonment. Both are felonies.
In a statement released late Sunday, Merriman said he was worried for the safety of Tequila because she appeared to be intoxicated and he didn't want her to drive. He went on to say that Paramedics were called to his home and they reported no injuries to Tequila.
Todd Macaluso, Merriman's attorney, disputed Tequila's account of the events and said he's confident that his client will not be charged by the District Attorney's Office.
"There was absolutely no wrongdoing on the part of Mr. Merriman," said Macaluso. "He essentially was doing what was appropriate under the circumstances in trying to protect the safety of Miss Tequila. There were numerous eyewitnesses that will support his version of the events that transpired at his home."
Merriman, 25, was taken into custody and later released on bail. He was not immediately available for any comment, however, he did say via a text message to a reporter with ESPN, that Tequila is only a female acquaintance and not his girlfriend.
Tequila was taken to a hospital. Her condition was not immediately available from the hospital. However, police did say that see was able to walk and talk and that deputies did not see any serious injuries.
Merriman said he planned to participate in San Diego's afternoon practice and speak afterward, adding he thinks the matter will all be over soon.
