Is Tim Tebow getting ready to step aside as the quarterback of the Florida Gators? Not likely.
However the Gators do have another quarterback ready to take slide under center this season and it is not back-up John Brantley.
Joe Haden, one of Florida's best defensive players, has been working with the quarterbacks in practice and planning to get some repetitions there this season.
"I'm not going to steal Tebow's job. I'm going to borrow it for a second," Haden said on Monday. "I'm real excited about that. I always told coach Meyer I wanted to get back on that side even if he could get me two plays or something like that."
Haden played quarterback at Friendly High School in Maryland. He set a state record with 7,371 yards passing and also tied a state record with 80 touchdown passes.
"I used to really play quarterback," Haden said. "It's not like I'm a defensive back trying to play quarterback. Opponents might have to play the same defenses as they do against Tebow, because I can throw the ball, too."
With the departure of Percy Harvin to the NFL, the Gators have been looking for another option to have along with Tebow in the backfield. Haden began taking repetitions behind Tebow and Brantley during summer workouts.
He expects to see some time at the quarterback position in Florida's opener on Sept. 5 against Charleston Southern.
