The LSU Tigers are hoping that with a little less drama happening this offseason, they will be able to compete for a national title this season.

In 2008, the Tigers finished with a disappointing 8-5 record after coach Les Miles had to suspend, then subsequently expel, quarterback Ryan Perrilloux from the team for violating team rules and reportedly failing a drug test. LSU never recovered from the turmoil.

Odds makers like the Bayou Bengals' chances to rebound in 2009 calling them one of the favorites behind Florida to win the SEC. They are giving about 3.5/1 odds that the Tigers will win the conference and about 20/1 odds at the BCS Championship.

All of last season was not a waste for LSU. They did have a resounding 38-3 win over Georgia Tech in the
Chick-fil-A Bowl. While nothing has been made official, look for highly-touted Jordan Jefferson to start the season at quarterback. He made great steps in the chances he was given late in the season. If Jefferson does not emerge as the starter, Jarrett Lee is back as well.

Lee threw for over 1,800 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2008.

Along with optimism at the quarterback position, Miles is hoping that with running back Charles Scott and receiver Brandon LaFell both returning offensively this season, that LSU will get back on track in 2009.

Defensively, the Tigers will return safety Harry Coleman, defensive end Rahim Alem, and defensive back Chris Hawkins.

LSU should be one of the most improved teams in the SEC this season. If there defense can step up and play well, the Tigers will be a tough team to beat.
