The New England Patriots' 2008 season most certainly did not go as they had hoped. Even after losing their Pro Bowl quarterback Tom Brady in week one, the Pats still managed a 11-5 record. However, finishing tied, in terms of wins and losses, with the fourth best record in the AFC, they failed to make the playoffs.

In 2009, with their leader back under center, New England is looking very good to odds makers. The Patriots are being called one of the leagues favorites to win the Super Bowl at 4/1. While the money line for the Pats to win the AFC Eastern Division is sitting at -600.

After giving up back-up QB Matt Cassel to the Kansas City Chiefs in a off-season trade, Tom Brady's knee has, reportedly, returned to full strength. With Brady back along with the acquisition of veterans; running back Fred Taylor and wide receiver Joey Galloway, not to mention starters Randy Moss, Wes Welker and Laurence Maroney, the New England offense figures to be as strong as
ever.

On the other side of the ball, the Pats traded out of the first round of the 2009 NFL draft and ended up with four second round selections. In an attempt to add some depth to the defense, they used three of those four picks on "D". With the 34th overall selection, they grabbed Oregon safety Patrick Chung. With the 40th pick, they took defensive tackle Ron Brace and with the 41st pick they took cornerback Darius Butler.

Three players coach Belichick hopes to have anchoring his defense for years to come.

As far as laying your money down, what's not to like about the New England Patriots, especially for a division title. The Miami Dolphins over-achieved in 2008, the New York Jets have a new coach, a new quarterback and a new scheme on defense, so who knows what you are going to get out of them. Finally, Terrell Owens and the Buffalo Bills will probably show some improvement, but will not be consistent enough to challenge the Patriots.

The smart money will be on the New England Patriots to come out of the AFC East.
