According to NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy, commissioner Roger Goodell has notified Plaxico Burress that the league office is initiating a review of incidents involving Burress under the personal conduct policy.

The events in question stem from when Burress shot himself in the thigh November 29th in a Manhattan nightclub. The wide receiver now faces up to 3 1/2 years in prison on a charged of criminal possession of a weapon.

On Monday, Burress made a brief appearance in court where Judge Felicia Mennin adjourned the case until September 23rd, enabling the former Giants wide out to continue negotiations with several NFL teams in hopes of returning to the field in 2009.

There
is no doubt that teams will be interested in Burress and they are hoping the commissioner acts swiftly. Only when Goodell hands down league discipline will those interested parties be able actively to pursue the wide-out.

The commissioner's office has said that Goodell had been waiting for the legal process to be complete, but as it is delayed with no clear indication of when it will be concluded, he has decided to take the initiative.

League sources say that the NFL's vice president of labor and law policy, Adolpho Birch, notified Burress of the commissioner's review on Friday.

In nine seasons with the New York Giants and the Pittsburgh Steelers, Plaxico Burress has 505 career receptions for 7,845 yards and 55 touchdowns.
