After a brief hearing that took only moments, the gun possession case against New York Giants star Plaxico Burress was adjourned Tuesday until June 15th. However, Burress's attorney, Benjamin Brafman said the matter could be resolved sooner if a plea agreement can be reached.

The stems from an incident in which Burress accidentally shot himself in the leg in a Manhattan nightclub back in November. The Pro Bowl wide receiver faces two felony weapons possession charges that carrying a minimum prison sentence of 3 1/2 years upon conviction.

Brafman told reporters after the hearing that he had reached no plea agreement with prosecutors, but he said discussions were continuing. If the two sides reach an agreement, they will not necessarily
wait for the scheduled court date.

"There's been a lot reported in recent days, a lot's been said that I don't think is necessarily accurate," Brafman said. "As we speak there is no agreement of any kind. We're trying our best to see if there is a way to resolve the case."

When asked whether Burress would play for the Giants this year, Brafman said, "It's not my decision. It's the Giants' decision and Plaxico's decision. I assume a lot will depend on how, when and if this case is resolved and June 15th is the next day we are back unless there is a reason to come back earlier."

If Burress does end up in New York for the 2009 season, the timing may workout for everyone. The Giants have a mandatory veterans minicamp scheduled to begin June 16, the day after the new hearing date.
