According to reports coming out of Denver, the relationship between the Broncos front office and their quarterback Jay Cutler has become so strained that the 11th overall pick in the 2006 NFL Draft may be asking for a trade.

An unnamed source close to the situation in the Mile-High City says that Cutler had a conference call with head coach Josh McDaniels and owner Pat Bowlen on Monday that did not go well. Apparently, the Broncos new head coach (McDaniels) told Cutler he expects him to fit into his plans and left the door open he could be traded.

The problems between the two began when the story broke that McDaniels, the former New England Patriots offensive coordinator who replaced Mike Shanahan after 14 seasons, engaged in discussions about acquiring Matt Cassel from the Patriots in a three-way
trade. Cutler claims that the Broncos initiated the talks, while McDaniels publicly said he was approached about a deal.

After the phone call the source said Cutler would rather be traded now if Denver isn't going to commit to him long-term and that he maintains that he was totally on board with McDaniels until the trade talks story broke. Now trust is Cutler's biggest problem with McDaniels and the organization.

Cutler passed for a franchise record 4,526 yards last season to go with 25 TD passes and made his first Pro Bowl. However, heading into his fourth season, the former Vanderbilt stand-out has won only 17 of his 37 career starts, has never reached the playoffs.

Heading toward the 2009 NFL Draft, in a year that looks to be particularly thin at the quarterback position, Cutler could become a hot commodity for teams in need of a new signal caller.
