After 127 days as interim head coach of the Raiders, Tom Cable is now officially the main man in Oakland. Cable will be officially introduced as the head coach at an Wednesday news conference at the team's facility in Alameda, California.
Cable led the Raiders for the final 12 games of the 2008 season going 4-8 after replacing Lane Kiffin. The former offensive line coach, Cable, rallied Oakland to back-to-back victories to end last season.
It seems that Raiders owner and managing general partner Al Davis' interviews with about a half dozen candidates for the job did nothing to persuade Davis that Winston Moss or Kevin Gilbride were better options.
Tom Cable was the head coach at his alma mater, the University of Idaho, from 2000-2003. He compiled a record of 11-35 in four straight losing seasons with the Vandals. When Idaho did not renew his contract at the end of the 2003 season, Cable worked as the offensive coordinator at UCLA for '04 and '05. In 2006, the journeyman, moved to the NFL serving as the Atlanta Falcons offensive line coach.
Apparently, the Raiders never seriously entertained the though of hiring anyone besides Cable. However, while waiting to announce Cable's hiring, Davis filled several positions on the Raiders' new staff, hiring a few new assistants and retaining several others. Their most note worthy addition being, veteran offensive coach Paul Hackett to be JaMarcus Russell's quarterbacks coach.
Now, with the head coach position finally solidified, Oakland can get to work hiring coordinators. They're also deep in preparations for the draft, in which they have the seventh overall pick.
