Jets Fans Are Happy Now... The trade of Brett Favre to the New York Jets Thursday had widespread and rippling implications around the NFL. Quarterbacks throughout the league felt the reverberation of the Jets' acquisition, as some jobs became more secure, while others were put in jeopardy.
The most immediate impacts were upon Aaron Rodgers and Chad Pennington. Rodgers now not only must live up to replacing a legend, but also take undeserved blame for forcing Favre out of town. The last time a true sports hero was rushed off so ungracefully, it was Michael Jordan being eased into retirement so that Jerry Krauss could part with Phil Jackson and Scottie Pippen and rebuild the Chicago Bulls his way. It will be interesting to see how Favre does; the Jets' line has been a sore spot more than quarterback play. In fact, Pennington holds both career and single-season Jets records for quarterback rating. Brett may be happy now, but if he starts hitting the ground with regularity, he might find himself dreaming of Mississippi.
Meanwhile, Ted Thompson has put himself in an interesting quandry. Though much of the messiest parts of the situation were Favre's doing, the constant yo-yoing and daily changes announced to the media must have worn thin on Packers fans. Thompson can only hope he is not remembered with Krauss when history looks back.
