Panthers 38 : Buccaneers 23 Monday night the Carolina Panthers seized control of the NFC South by running over one of the league's top defenses. With the impressive victory last night, DeAngelo Williams, Jonathan Stewart and the Panthers have proven to be one of the NFL's top teams.
Williams rushed for a career-high 186 yards and two touchdowns, Stewart added 115 yards and two more scores while the Panthers set a team record for yards rushing for the second time in a month.
Three weeks ago against the Lions, Carolina pounded out 264 yards on the ground en route to their 31-22 victory over Detroit. This time it was against the NFL's fourth-rated defense, the Bucs came in having allowed only one rushing
"Those guys are that good," said coach Jon Gruden. "Those guys are going to make guys miss. Both of them."
Panthers' receiver Steve Smith added 117 yards on nine catches and one score. Carolina was able to overcome quarterback Jake Delhomme's two interceptions behind their strong ground game.
"It's kind of what we're built around," said Panthers coach Jon Fox. "I think we got bigger and more physical up front and both of those backs are pretty special."
With last night's win, Carolina now has a firm grip on the NFC South and could mean home field advantage throughout the playoffs. It sets up a very exciting match-up with the New York Giants in week 16 that could be for the best record in the NFC.
