Saturday afternoon the Indiana Hoosiers head to Beaver Stadium in University Park to take on Penn State as the Nittany Lions look to keep their Rose Bowl hopes alive. Odds makers are calling Penn State heavy favorites against the Hoosiers. NCAA betting lines have the Lions at -35.5 with the total sitting at 56.5.
After a last-second loss to Iowa a week ago, Penn State's national title dreams are almost certainly evaporated. The 7th ranked Nittany Lions can still earn a trip to Pasadena with wins in their final two games at Beaver Stadium, starting against Big Ten cellar dweller Indiana.
"We need to keep our heads up. We can still have a heck of a year," coach Joe Paterno said. "We can't start moaning about this one."
The loss to Iowa has Penn State fans remembering the 1999 Nittany Lions team that also had national hopes at 9-0 when a stunning defeat at the hands of Minnesota sent the Lions into a three-game tailspin to close the regular season.
"It's hard for me to remember exactly why we weren't able to get that club to regroup and go on and win some games," Paterno said. "I do know we obviously took a real flop, and we're going to try to prevent that this time."
This year the Lions should have a little easier go of it as Indiana comes into town.
A week after losing at home to Central Michigan, the Hoosiers gave up 601 yards of total offense to Wisconsin last Saturday and allowed a four-point halftime deficit snowball into a 55-20 loss.
This Nittany Lions team will be playing with some intensity for sure this week. With the Rose Bowl within their grasp, Coach Paterno will have his boys ready to play. Take Penn State at home and give the 35.5 points.
