Friday night the Boise State Broncos head to San Jose to take on the Spartans. Odds makers are calling 6-0 Boise State a 7 1/2 point favorite on the road with the total sitting at 41.
The 13th ranked Broncos come into Spartan Stadium with, as usual, one of the nation's top rated scoring offenses. However, this season their defense is making a name for themselves as well.
The unbeaten Broncos are scoring more than 32 points per game while their defense is letting up a mere 10.5 point per contest. The Boise State defense shut down an offensively prolific Hawaii team to just 7 points in a 27-7 victory last Friday night, intercepting five passes, recording seven sacks and holding the Warriors to 288 total yards, including just 56 yards rushing.
"Defense has been great all year, and they just step up to the challenge each week," quarterback Kellen Moore said. "It's fun on our side to know that they are going to get out there and take care of business."
Friday night San Jose State hopes to spoil the Broncos perfect season. The 5-2 Spartans bring in a 3-0 conference record and can take a firm grip on the WAC lead with an upset win against the Broncos.
Like Boise State, the Spartans have a strong defense as well. San Jose State has given up just 16.6 points per game, second among WAC teams. They had six sacks and forced four turnovers in a 31-14 road win over New Mexico State a week ago.
"Our defense had just an incredible night. They've been playing great all year," said coach Dick Tomey. "We had a lot of sacks, a lot of pressure, a lot of tackles for loss, and the pressure was intense. Our defensive front is a good outfit."
This is San Jose State's biggest game of the season. They are riding high after a nice conference win last week. Expect Tomey to have his team ready to play. The Broncos may indeed win but San Jose State will keep it close. Take the Spartans at home getting the 7 1/2 points.
