Georgia Bulldogs Quarterback Mackenzi Adams will start in place of Chris Nickson as no. 22 Vanderbilt tries to pull off an upset in Athens as the Commodores head into Georgia to take on the 10th ranked Bulldogs in this Top 25 showdown. Odds makers call the Bulldogs 14 point favorites at home.
Vanderbilt coach Bobby Johnson said that he would be switching to Adams as his starter to spark the offense. Johnson pulled Nickson in last Saturday's 17-14 loss at Mississippi State after he threw a fourth quarter interception.
"A lot of things that went wrong last Saturday in the first half weren't particularly Chris Nickson's fault," Johnson said. "But at the same time, when the offense wasn't doing much in the third quarter, our coaching staff felt like we had to make a change."
The 5-1 Commodores failed to get a first down in the first and third quarters and finished with 107 yards of offense. Nickson was just 3-of-10 for 15 yards and
The Bulldogs will be looking to avoid another poor performance against a top team. They fell behind 31-0 at the half against Alabama on Sept. 27 and went on to lose 41-30 in a game that was not as close as the final score indicated.
Georgia bounced back a week ago with a 26-14 home victory over Tennessee. Quarterback Matthew Stafford had career bests in completions and yards, going 25-of-36 for 310 yards against the Volunteers. Knowshon Moreno rushed for 101 yards after being held to a season low against the Crimson Tide.
On defense, the Bulldogs rank among the leaders in the nation against the rush. Giving up a mere 52.2 yards per game, Georgia ranks fourth in the country. The Bulldogs, however, are 82nd against the pass, surrendering over 220 yards per game.
The Commodores will have to lean on Adams' play to win. Look for the Georgia defense to step up and play well. Take the Bulldogs and give the points.
