Bob Sanders The Associated Press is reporting that Colts safety Bob Sanders could be out for up to six weeks with a high ankle sprain. Sanders, the 2007 Defensive Player of the Year, injured the ankle in the second half of Sunday's win over the Minnesota Vikings.
Indianapolis general manager Bill Polian said that the Colts are not yet 100 percent sure of the severity of the injury, but it was safe to assume Sanders would miss 4-6 weeks. Polian also said the Pro Bowl safety could be having arthroscopic surgery on his knees while he recovers from the ankle sprain.
"He will be back, that is for sure," Polian said. Team doctors will have a clearer picture as to when he could be expected to return in the days to come.
In this past December, Sanders signed a 5-year, $37.5 million contract with $20 million guaranteed with the Colts, making him the highest paid safety in NFL history. In January he was named the AP Defensive Player of the Year for the 2007 NFL Season.
Sanders will add his name to the long list of Colts injuries. Pro Bowl center Jeff Saturday has not seen action since the pre season. Tight end Dallas Clark, a favorite target on QB Peyton Manning in the passing game, also missed this Sunday's game with Minnesota. Offensive linemen, Ryan Lilja, second round pick Mike Pollak and left tackle Tony Ugoh have all missed action.
