Saints wide receiver Marques Colston had surgery on his left thumb and will be out 4-6 weeks. Colston suffered a torn ligament in last Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Colston tried to continue, but finished the game with only three catches for 26 yards.

"I don't know if my thumb just got caught in an awkward position. It just bent all the way backward," said Colston to reports. "I guess the only silver lining is that I'm going to have a chance to come back and play a good portion of the season and hopefully be back in time for that playoff push."

Colston was the Saints seventh-round pick out of Hofstra in the 2006 draft. The Saints stand out wide receiver has gone on to compile over 2,200 yards
and 19 touchdowns in two seasons with New Orleans. With his 168 catches, he has become quarterback Brew Brees's favorite target.

"It's tough, especially you lose a guy as productive as him," Brees said on Wednesday. "But there's always an opportunity for a younger guy to step up. I'm confident in all our guys."

Brees threw for 343 yards and 3 touchdowns in Sunday's 24-20 win over the Bucs, only 26 of those yards to Colston.

Although, losing Colston will be a blow to the offense, Saints wide receiver Robert Meacham is expected to make his first start in Colston's stead.

"It's a dream come true," Meacham said. "I will do whatever it takes to make my teammates and coaches proud, so my family back home can hold there heads high."
